About Me

My name is Ian Barker. Born in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, in 1959, I grew up, and was mainly educated in the north-east. This peaked with an honours degree in business studies from the former Teesside Polytechnic.

Since 1983 I have worked in Information Technology. Following a spectacular leap sideways I moved to Live Publishing in 2003 as a staff writer on a range of computer magazines including the late lamented PC Extreme. I have now attained the dizzy heights of editor on the Magnesium Media magazine PC Tools. I’m also a regular contributor to PC Utilities and PC Explorer.

I am single and live in splendid semi-detachment at Westhoughton, near Bolton in Lancashire.

For more years than I care to remember I’ve been writing 'dire verse', primarily for my own and colleague's amusement, and as a contribution to radio shows. This website is the first time that a number of my works have been collected in one place.

In 2001 I began to take my writing a little more seriously. I’ve succeeded in getting a few sketches broadcast on BBC Radio 2's The News Huddlines. I’ve also had short stories in magazines, and two pieces accepted for the WritersNet Anthology, published in autumn 2002. Further short stories have been published in the Web zines Starving Arts, and Crime Scene Scotland, and more recently a co-written tale in Admit Two. I also have a non-fiction article on the Backspace writer’s site.

I’ve written two (as yet unpublished) novels, extracts from which can be found on this site.
